Spott is an Android app from Inochi Ventures that allows you to learn more about your chosen films and TV that has been made within your own backyard. Using your phone's GPS system, Spott allows users with the idea to browse by movie/show or their location to understand interesting details of that movie, show, or actors.
For example, Stapleton International Airport (now Denver IA) was edinburgh airport in the movie "Die Hard 2" with Bruce Willis. Up until recently, I had no idea the hotel in the movie "Dumb and Dumber" been the Stanley Hotel, which has been also the inspiration and setting for Stephen King's popular book and movie, "The Shining".
Along with giving users the ability to see their town in a very whole new way, a movies over the app, plus you'll be able to send in your own photo from your famous locale where you live.
The interface for Spott is easy to manuever around - you can choose movies or shows by title, location, or movies which can be near you. Obviously the nearby feature is the better, particularly if you're traveling or recently moved. As noted, movie locations near my new capital of scotland - Denver along with the state of Colorado are pretty popular.
Another highlight is to be able to view stills from movies, though for some there aren't up to you would find should you did a fairly easy Google search, so when mentioned, it is possible to buy DVDs of movies from the app. While an interesting concept, I'm not really confident that I want to purchase movies on the go. It would likely to end up better should you could watch said movie instead.
One issue with this app may be the fact that there's not a lot of Spotts yet. For instance, being a former Tucson High Badger, my state they fame is that this movie "Can't Buy Me Love" with pre-McDreamy Patrick Dempsey was filmed at our school, but I couldn't discover a listing when setting up my former zip code. High point though is the fact that I learned aspects of Casablanca were filmed within the nearby capital of scotland- Flagstaff, it's nice to see that a classic black and white film is listed.
There are other downsides, such as actor listings, which might be meh at best, however, that's where the Spotters thing will come in. Too bad this app didn't turn out before I moved.
As a motion picture and TV fan who occurs love trivia, this is a pretty good app to have in the event you've got an Android phone. Definitely the highlight on this app is to view a wide selection of locations of film scenes, though I think most of the people will be thinking about where their hometown or current town factors in several movies and shows.
A disappointment is a few areas are lacking, which can be annoying for users who know a specific movie or show was filmed within their neck in the woods. But to counter this, users can supply images and upload these to Spott. This is actually an excellent social interaction that gets fans involved as they proudly show off their cities and states.
I think a huge let down could be the fact that this app isn't free; with simply a small amount of information, this really should be a free app that gets upgraded to pay for more expenses (like a chance to buy and download movies). Luckily, the purchase price isn't too hefty -- only a dollar and some change, therefore it might actually be well worth the purchase only when to hope Inochi builds the app with fan interaction and loyalty.
