Flash Video Streaming Not Working! Your Thanksgiving free movie list is only two movies long, but what movies! Unlike Halloween (that I offered a list of 100 free scary movies here), Thanksgiving needs a different twist. Big oil company propaganda which has a heart! Just the free movie we need for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one with the most lyrical American films available. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation inside the United States National Film Registry through the Library of Congress to "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of your Cajun boy and his awesome family, living on the bayous in such a way of life we can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land for the oil company, which comes in, drills, and leaves everything just like it was, clean and unspoiled with the exception that the family has a little more money. (Yes, it was funded with the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends almost all of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating over the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, along with his pet raccoon. He never wears an existence preserver or shoes... doesn't also have a cell phone to contact case he gets struggling. There is not much story, merely a celebration (in these stunning grayscale photography that you may well wonder what are the big deal is approximately color) of the way of life that's no longer around.
All with the actors were amateurs, as well as most, this is their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. A grayscale silent film that ends which has a woman being burned alive? Oh, yes, just what every family needs at Thanksgiving. But, I have three good reasons for including The Passion of Joan of Arc with this pair of free movies for Thanksgiving.
First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever made. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died convinced that the last copy have been destroyed. In a bit of weirdness that sounds a lot more like a movie compared to truth, a virtually complete print was discovered in 1981 in the janitor's closet of the Norwegian mental institution.
Finally, I am grateful that people can watch this magnificent film, on many lists of the greatest films ever, totally free online at Gloria.tv, a Roman Catholic video site.
Maria Falconetti (more), who plays Joan, suffered an emotional breakdown through the making with this film, and he or she never made another film. Pauline Kael (more), a notoriously demanding film critic, asserted Falconetti's performance "may function as the finest performance ever upon film."
