War Movies Africa! Your Thanksgiving free movie list is just two movies long, but what movies! Unlike Halloween (that I offered that you simply list of 100 free scary movies here), Thanksgiving requires a different twist. Big oil company propaganda having a heart! Just the free movie we'd like for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one from the most lyrical American films available. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry with the Library of Congress being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of an Cajun boy and his family, living around the bayous in such a way of life we can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land on the oil company, which comes in, drills, and instead gives off everything much like it was, clean and unspoiled with the exception that the family features a little more money. (Yes, it had been funded by the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends the majority of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating over the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, together with his pet raccoon. He never wears an existence preserver or shoes... doesn't actually have a cell phone to get in touch with case he gets in danger. There is not much story, only a celebration (in such stunning monochrome photography that you could well wonder what are the big deal is about color) of your way of life that is certainly no longer along with us.
All with the actors were amateurs, and then for most, this was their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. Boudreaux, who played the boy, was residing in a FEMA trailer regarding his wife of fifty-five years, after Hurricane Rita destroyed their property. (source). He had an opportunity at fame within the movies, but that they stayed where he was from and apparently grew up with an appreciation of family (a married relationship of over 50 years) reflects why I consider The Louisiana Story a suitable free movie first of our most family-friendly holidays.

A white and black silent film that ends with a woman being burned alive? Oh, yes, exactly what every family needs at Thanksgiving. But, I have 3 good reasons for including The Passion of Joan of Arc with this pair of free movies for Thanksgiving.
First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever produced. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died convinced that the last copy was destroyed. In a amount of weirdness that sounds more like a movie than the truth, a practically complete print was discovered in 1981 in the janitor's closet of the Norwegian mental institution.
